Accommodation companies urged to halt demanding deposit from NSFAS funded college students



The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords to not require a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.

This arrives immediately after NSFAS obtained reports about some accommodation companies who need NSFAS-funded students to pay a deposit or top-up payment in order to get access to the authorized private accommodation.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation providers from the compulsory conditions, as furnished by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Settlement involving the personal accommodation companies and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS said in a press release on Thursday.

The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states the rent will probably be paid out monthly into the accommodation company (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf from the lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance using the NSFAS terms and conditions for personal accommodation companies’ participation on the student accommodation portal.

"The lessor may not require or allow the lessee to pay for a deposit, top-up payments, or almost every other forms of payment to your lessor, or every other person in reference to this arrangement, which includes payment of hire, whilst awaiting payment from NSFAS. The lessor shall don't have any recourse versus the lessee for any default while in the payment of rent by NSFAS," the arrangement reads.

The NSFAS click here terms and conditions for private accommodation suppliers’ participation on the student accommodation portal also states that: "Where the NSFAS-funded student is defunded as a consequence of an incorrect selection by NSFAS, the coed will not be liable for payment of any arrear rent into the accommodation service provider, up right up until the date of being defunded."

NSFAS explained that the place the NSFAS-funded student nsfas university allowances chooses to carry on occupying the leased premises, notwithstanding staying defunded by NSFAS, the student will be answerable for payment of lease on the lessor with the day of remaining defunded.

The scheme emphasised that any dispute arising between the parties regarding the interpretation or implementation of nsfas document submission deadline the agreement, must be dealt with in accordance with any dispute resolution procedure determined by NSFAS for this purpose.
